Most aptly described as a visual poet, Mimi Shapiro mixes trinkets and treasures, words and images, into a powerfully evocative body of work. Each piece conveys a sense of time and place as seen through the mind's eye of memory, combining reality and fantasy to create an amazingly cohesive vision. Her deeply "connected" artistic expressions are accessible and immediate, while allowing interpretation of the viewer’s imagination.

Artists today really have to be a more vocal group. Ghandi said you have to be the change that you want to see in the world. With new creative ideas, there is so much that can be accomplished, to make our world a better world for everyone in it. Art and stories are a part of the fabric of our lives and they link us to one another.

Her works are included in many notable collections worldwide, including The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete & Visual Poetry; Maitland Art Center; and Silversea Cruise Line. Recent exhibitions include: 2nd World Festival on Paper in Slovenia/200l, Stanley Picker Gallery / Kingston University, London; Edinburgh Festival 2000, the Richard Demarco 70/2000 exhibition, touring Scotland, England, Malta, Greece and beyond; Bolivar Gallery, Kingston, Jamaica; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Book Fair. Mimi is a recipient of many fellowships and grants.
