James Mastin is known for his public sculpture gardens and his figurative work. His "Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden" was declared a National Monument of The Bahamas; his "Key West Historical Sculpture Garden" is a popular tourist destination in Old Towne, Key West; and his "Holocaust Memorial" in Sunrise, Florida will be installed in 2003.

Over his career, Mastin has sculpted amazingly lifelike bronze portrait busts of over 100 historic heroes and celebrities, including President Harry Truman, Ernest Hemmingway, Toussaint Louveture, Henri Christophe, Henry Flagler, and Lady Marguerite Pindling. These works are located in the United States, The Bahamas, Haiti, San Maarten and in the United Kingdom.

His personal work is allegorical and whimsical. Each piece is a unique commentary on human affairs. "The Door" shows the frustration of two men working together from both sides of a door, yet still unable to open it, despite their best cooperative efforts. "Madcaps" depicts various personality fragments hidden within each of us - each fragment waiting its turn to display its own special perspective. "Sunbeam" and "Moonshine" are a pair of dreamy children, each viewing the world through a different lens - one a dreamer and one full of enthusiasm. "The Dancer" shows the lyrical qualities of the human form.

Visitors are invited to the artist's Miami studio. Inquiries about commissioned work for gardens or interiors are welcome.
