A passion for stone and the wonderful secrets that lie within uncut marble are the driving force in Sylvia Jaffe’s work. From a “rock-hound childhood” to an undergraduate Art minor, and later to a Fine Arts degree in Studio Art and Art History, Jaffe has been fortunate that for 50 years she has been able to ride the wings of creativity.

Sylvia uses all three-dimensional media and loves to combine the different textures of metal, stone, neon, bronze, and wood. The ideas come pouring in from nature and from the joy of being an artist. She says that, “every form – a cloud, a wave, a bone, or a dream – is grist for one’s aesthetic mill.” Jaffe will truly need another 50 years to “glean her teeming brain.”

Sylvia has spent 20 summers in Pietrasanta, Italy, learning from master artisans and being inspired by the mountains of stone around her. It is also her joy to be a professional teacher and be surrounded 6 days a week with wonderful artists in her workshops. She has watched their skill grow through imagination and sheer hard work to qualify as competent, prize-winning professionals. She is proud to share their joy in sculpture.
