A native of New York and long-time resident of Washington, DC, Barbara Benezra is a professional steel sculptor and painter. Her career as an artist began in 1979 when she realized her talent was her life’s mission.

After painting for many years, an oxyacetylene torch was placed in her hands and changed the course of her life’s work. She was absolutely taken by the joy and power of manipulating the molten steel. Creating exciting sculptures out of the hard, durable metal fascinated the artist. Benezra’s artistic spirit and creativity were fueled by drawing with fire, grinding designs in the material, and creating colors by heating the steel. New paths were opened up for her exploration.

The privilege of being able to translate visual thoughts into steel sculptures is both challenging and gratifying to Benezra. She works intuitively by jumping into a sheet of metal or blank canvas. The discovery process leads her to a finished piece of art usually related to nature. Its elegance and beauty, enhanced by its simplicity, speak to her. “The intimate, ‘soft’ illusion she breathes into a very hard and unforgiving medium is inspired,” said one critic.
